The only Stephen Harrisons I can find of around that age are all heads of families and nowhere near where his wife is. Sorry

Hi Carol, I am trying to find my grandfather, his wife of approximately 4 weeks is on the 1901 census with her mother, civil parish Pilsley, Derbyshire. On the marriage certificate, my grandfather, Stephen Harrison was a colliery banks manager, age 45, so I wondered if he could have been working. I cant find his birth certificate and would like to know the place he was born. If you are able to help, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks June

I think that the census schedules for enumerators listed different rules for people not staying in houses the night of the census. This included boats, tents and in the open air, but not sure if there was any provision for nightworkers in the pits. Which census were you interested in, as I do have some on disc and they include the schedules.

Well he wasn't with his wife, they had only been married about a month,so presumably he was on night shift at a colliery. Thanks for replying, I'll have to find where collieries are listed now Thanks again, June

Let me expand on Gwyneth's answer. Sometimes work, sometimes home, sometimes both and sometimes neither! Depends on how lucky you are:-)

If someone works nights which census record do they get entered on, their workplace or home, please? June
