Hi This is one of my favourite sources for links: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ It might be worth pretending you're just starting and having a look at the resources pages at the bottom of your homepage, here at GR. They do have some good links there. There's also a very good thread with a title something like "best websites". good hunting Christine

Hi Jackie, I've heard about Ancestry but don't know much about it. Further information would be much appreciated. Do you know which State your grandmother moved to? My understanding is that these records are maintained in State offices, rather than a central office. If you can provide me with as much detail as you have, I'd be happy to make enquiries for you. Cheers, Ed

Hi Ed I subscribe to Ancestry.com and would be happy to look up some details for you, but could you help me in return? My paternal grandmother moved to Oz back in the 70s & I'd like to get the details of her death cert. I don't know how easy that would be for you. Look forward to hearing from you. Jackie

Gee, Carol, I can work pretty late when I'm tracking something down in scotlandspeople, but I don't think I've put in an all-nighter! You take care and thanks for the help. Cheers, Ed

It is pretty dark here, it will probably be light by the time I get to bed.

Thanks Carol & Christine for your advice. I'll try the BMD and 1837 sites and see how I get on. Cheers, Ed

There is the Family Records Office in London, Islington I think. Also, counties have their own records offices as well. The LDS centres, if you have them over there have a lot of English records too.

Hi Ed like you all my rellies so far have been in Scotland and that is the research I'm familiar with, but there is a site www.1837.*com that I know a lot of people use. Remember to remove * Hope that's helpful Christine

Hi Carol (must be awfully dark in Somerset right now!), I've been given definate information on a marriage in 1913, so have asked my pal for more information on her ancestor from that marriage certificate. I'm trying to next find that person's birth record and from there to try to locate the parents' marriage and then birth records. Most of my own tree searches have focussed on births and marriages in Scotland because the certificates contain so much data and I'd like to follow the same pattern with the English records. Is there an English equivalent of the Scottish Records Office? Cheers, Ed

Where do you want to start Ed. Births marriages and deaths index can be found at FreeBMD or 1837online but you have to pay for that. 1881 census free at familysearch org and the 1871, 1891 and 1901 available on subscription from ancestry

Hi All, I've been on GenesReunited for a few months and am currently trying to help a friend locate some ancestors in England. I have heaps of experience looking through the Scottish Records Office (scotlandspeople.gov.uk) as I am Scottish (although now living in Oz) and have been tracing my family tree on and off for many years. I am, however, at an almost total loss when it comes to English records. Rather than muddle around, I would be most grateful for some pointers on where to start looking - it would be helpful for me, too, as one branch of my mother's tree seems to have a big gap in it and the people may have been in England for a while. Many thanks in advance. Ed
