Was he head of household in both cases? Did he live in Pendleton in 1901 or Bristol in 1891? If he moved from Somerset to Lancashire, it might have been by ship. Brenda

On the 1901 and the 1891 they are living at St George in Bristol. Thought at first I had the wrong family in 1891, but the address is the same as on the childrens birth certs I have. Will have a look at FHO Helen, thanks for that. I have found their marriage in 1878 and it seems she was still shelling peas in 1898. I also have a photograph of 8 of the children, all girls taken early 1900s. Even got names on the back.

It gets more intriguing. I have looked on FHO as Helen suggested and found the following in 1881 Name Samuel WHITTINGHAM Age 49 Occupation Enjine Fitter Birthplace Stockport, Cheshire, Address 1 Factory Street, Bristol St Philip & Jacob, Gloucester, England PRO ref RG11/2499 Folio 121 Page 4 FHL film no. 1341602 Harriet WHITTINGHAM Age 48 Occupation Furnace Man At Cotton Works Birthplace Bristol, I have Ellen Whittinghams birth certificate and she was born at 1 Factory Street, St Philip and Jacob, Bristol, 1883 but her father is William Whittingham and mother Elizabeth. Any ideas?

Hi Carol, An answer to your first question - It's not unusual for someone's birthplace to be entered as the place they are living in, as with William on the 1891 census. I know that's happened a few times in my family. Samuel would have been over 25 years older than William in 1881, so could Samuel be William's father? Lots of young couples, with or without a child, lived with one or other set of parents now and again, so possibly William and Elizabeth were living with his parents when Ellen was born. Alternatively, Elizabeth could have gone there for the birth. Women did often did that, especially with their first, though it was usually their own mother they stayed with (if she was still alive.) That is a good point Cazza. I will be more certain of that when I get Williams marriage certificate as that will give me his fathers name.
