Census enumerators did do some odd things at times - keep an open mind on all things.. I have a household with three ladies - Mother and two married daughters and their children. Three separate surnames. Mother is listed as head, her eldest daughter is listed as daughter BUT the other sister and her children are listed as sister and neices and nephews ! Thought I was going bonkers - oh and there is an odd unrelated uncle chucked in for good measure, still hav'nt worked out who he is yet, probably a brother to one of the sisters husbands.~:0(

Hi Susan, I agree with Sue that there's a good chance she was living with an uncle and aunt. If everything else you know ties up, then I'd say that the enumerator put down daughter by mistake. Try tracing back another generation on both Charles and Matthew, and if you find that they are brothers, then I'd go with the marriage certificate and not the census. Cazza

Firstly are both households in the area you would expect them to be. Do all the people in the household of Charles Forster tie in with what you know about the family. Could Matthew Forster be a brother to Chas and therefore your Grandmas uncle. It's just possible she was taken in by Uncle and Aunt if her own was a large family. I have a family of 11 children all born 1897 to 1917 and they say they often lived for long periods with Uncles and Aunts, especially if Dad was out of work but Uncle was'nt!
