I have grown up with my surname as Burnard with a 'U'. I have now found that on my father's birth certificate it is spelt with an 'E': Bernard. All his brothers and sisters used the U version, but in searching for my paternal grandfather I am now not sure which spelling to follow. Is this simply a Registrar who misspelt the surname and will it be best to go with the U?

Hi Carol, I have Wilcox in my tree and have found it spelt Wilcox, Willcox, Wilcocks and Willcocks! So yes, go with any possible spelling (good luck!). Mandy :)

Could be a misspelling but don't rule out anything. My Gt Gt Grandfather was Akroyd, all his children bar one were Akroyd, my Gt Grandfather was registered as Ackroyd as the registrar misspelt his name. As a man he changed the spelling by deedpole back to Akroyd! To make things confusing all the different branches of the family (from the Gt GT Grandfather's brothers) spelt their names in a variety of ways! Jacquie
