the only other james chamberlain with father name george born in 1870 that i have found is based in whalley, lancashire, so i may look at that family as a possiblity next.

Yes, it's quite possible that Jane is an error and should have been James, but 1891 also gives Jane. I would be surprised if 2 out of the 3 censuses were wrong, but who knows!!!!

so is it not possible that the census that has james down as jane, made a mistake seeing as the child was only a year old? and the person taking the details had not heard the correct name as misherad james as jane? or jane as james.i thank you for your help lesley, that is very good of you to check that out for me. i never checked chamberham in the 1870 birth indexes, just the variations of chamberlain. maybe i will have to start this james chambelain search again, and be looking for him in a different area, if all i have is the sons name and age plus the fathers name it might make it a little easier.

gosh that may put a spanner in the works! but the 1881 census definately says james chamberlain, 11 yrs born in croydon. its all becoming abit complicated now and i dont really know what the best course of action for my research should be. its a bit of a roller coaster ride all this. lol

I had a look at the family you mentioned in the 1881 census, living in Croydon and tried to find them in 1871 and 1891 to see if there were any more clues. The James you mentioned as an 11-year old actually appears as a daughter JANE in both 1871 and 1891. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it might help in some way.

very interesting suggestions cazza, i hadnt thought of getting a siblings certificate instead. i will have to look into the croydon registry office first, and possible the baptism. i will see if emma skinner comes up with anything as well as she has said she may be able to help in some way. thanx

Hi Scott, You might have to accept that his birth wasn't registered, or it was one of those that has been missed off the GRO index. You could try Croydon register office, ask them if they have a record of his birth. District registrars are usually very helpful, especially if you've already tried the GRO and had no luck. Alternatively, if you have decided that this is the right family, you may have to order a sibling's certficate to get the details. Failing having a birth ceritficate, you could try tracking down a baptism for him, even if it's only to have something in place of the BC. Cazza

Scott Its not much use to you but I sympathize as my great grandfather seems not to have been registered at birth he is not the only one I have found not to have been registered, but I cannot find who his mother and father really are as he was brought up by his grandmother. The others who were not registered at least they were brought up by the parents. In my case he wasnt even baptised, wonder was your fellow you could check that one that would be the only course of action to follow. Good Luck Pat x

hi. i have an ancestor that i have the marriage certificate of, married in 1916 aged 46, which means he would be born 1870 give or take a year either side. so i set about looking in the frc birth indexes to fin my guys name (chamberlain) but i could not find him in the birth indexes i searched 2 years either side of 1870. i also looked at the names spelt slightly differently (chamberlin, chamberlaine etc) but still no avail. i was looking for a birth in the surrey district as i have looked on the 1881 census and found a chamberlin with same name and same name father in croydon surrey, which is the area my family come from. the census indicates the the guy i am looking for was 11 years old in 1881, which is a correct calculation for born in 1870. it also shows that he was born in croydon, so why cant i find his birth in the indexes at frc? anybody know what my next step should be to find out about his parents, as they would obviously be on his birth certificate which is why i want it. even though his fathers name is on the marriage certificate that i already have. i really dont know what to try next. on his marriage certificate it says he was a royal engineer as proffession so he must have been in the army of some sort. any help appreciated.
