Help on finding great grandparents

Yahoo I found them and it's really weird and took loads of credits on 1837online to do it! My Mum and Dad were insistent that my gt Grandmothers maiden names was Tallis or Talliss but on my grandmothers birth cert it said Harris. I looked through 1837 and eventually found a marriage of Harry Gardner and Talliss. I crossed referenced this with Talliss marrying Gardner to get the first name and sure enough it was there Bertha Tallis. I also found her birth record. I am so excited about this. Course I could have saved time if I hadn't been so stubborn and had looked under Talliss in the first place, looks like mother knows best after all... :)

Thanks very much, I think you are right and I'm going to have to order these certs *fingers crossed* Unfortunately no knowledge of her parents (in fact Dad was convinced her maiden name was Tallis, but on Grans birth cert it definitely said Harris!) Thanks for replying, Ann

Hi Ann, My great-grandmother and her 2nd husband moved around a lot as they were in service together as a cook and a chauffeur. I'm sure other people must have done the same for many reasons. Have you found a Bertha Harris registered in a neighbouring district as they might not have moved far? If not, then you will need to go through the relevant indexes again and take off all the Bertha Harris' there are. At least you have a date of birth to use as a check when applying for a certificate. If you have a few Bertha's to choose from, apply at the local district offices instead of the GRO, as they will refund all your money if their certificate isn't the one you need. Best of luck, Cazza

If you have found any Bertha Harris births in the Dec quarter of 1902 or the Jan quarter of 1903 I think you will have to check them out. Do you have an idea of her parents' names which you could use to eliminate/confirm any birth certs? People aren't always born where they say they were or where they think they were. I myself was born in Redhill because that's where the hospital was, but I have only been back there twice in my entire life. As to her marriage, you should have a rough idea which decade that took place in to narrow down your search. nell

I can't seem to find anything on my greatgrandparents on my father's side. I have my gran's birth cert and she is down as I knew her as Bertha Gardner nee Harris. Her birthday was 13th Dec 1902 but I can find neither a birth reference or a marriage certificate to her husband, Harry. I know that at the time of my Gran's birth they were living in Warwick. I have tried FreeBMD and 1837 online and have no other ideas where to go as they will not be on any census that has been released yet. Can anybody give me any other useful places to search. Is it possible that Bertha could be a nickname for something? I have found other Bertha Harrises but not in Warwick, course I guess it could just be that her parents moved when she was very little and she had no memory of it....which was the case with my Grandparents on my mothers side. Any ideas anyone? Thanks Ann
