Unfortunately I have a few families originating in Ireland. Has anyone used the griffiths Evaluation & is it worth subscribing to? Alternatively....is there a better site to subscribe to for Irish info? Thanks

I have heard of it, but haven`t used it. You could have a look at Irish Origins http://www(.)irishorigins(.)com/ or look at genuki for more links http://www(.)genuki(.)org(.)uk/big/irl/ Cyndis list is good also Fianna

I didn't know it was online, as far as I knew the full version was only available in Ireland. The online indexes I've found are useless - they tell you that a surname is present in a particular place, but that's not much use. I'd be very much interested to hear where the full version is.

FULL version of Griffiths is in The National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street Dublin. Very useful. Have never seen it anywhere else. Need to go there to access the actual records but their website is very good for "Newbies" to Irish Family History. Website: http(://)www(.)nli(.)ie(/)new(_)wha(t_r)es(.)htm (remove brackets) Some are online but patchy. That is all you will get in the Griffiths Index, just the head of the household but you need to know where your Folk are coming from to read the clues. I have found even the Indexes very helpful, but I do know where mine are from. You can google the ones that are online. Try your local LDS centre to see if they can help you. Janet

Cris, I am proud of my Irish ancestors....it's just that I have heard that they are nearly impossible to trace. I know they must have been lovely people because I turned out so well !! LOL Karen

Karen Australian death certs are so good that I am sure you have places where people have come from on them. We have a few from OZ which gave us some Irish and English clues. Janet

Karen If you know the county where your relatives originated you might find the follow website of use - remove the brackets before using. http://www(.)censusfinder(.)com/ireland.htm Level of information varies and is not the same for each county, however it is free! There are also a lot of useful links to on-line Irish informaiton. Use the drop down box on the left hand side in green to navigate between the counties. Good Luck. Karen

The griffiths valuation is perhaps the best way to trace our irish Ancestors - many records were destroyed in 1922. Infact the only census that are complete are the 1901 & 1911. There are lots of web sites to try, but it really is a hit and miss game. I did a look up for you today Karen on the UK 1851 census for john Irwin in Antrim maybe these web sites in Northern Ireland maybe of further interest to you : www(.)rootsweb(.)com/~nirwgw/ /www(.)ancestryireland(.)co(.)uk/ /www(.)nifhs(.)org/ remove () Much happiness Debi
