Deryn If she was a step daughter then she would be the mothers child. If the mother was there try and find a marriage for him and see the possible wives if you are using freebmd by clicking on the page number. She should have her mothers maiden name. Or you can put the details on here and we can check for you. Irene

There is no line - it's just blank. I found a person - right name - right age living with another family as a step-daughter on 1891 census. So presume one or both of the parents died but I couldnt find a death anywhere. I wanted to try find her birth and try other sites for deaths for the parents.

You can not rely on ages either on the census or on marriage certificates. Some people simply did not know their age as it wasn't as important as we think it is today, and some simply lied. (The birth certificate is the only one I trust for working out the correct age). If there is a line through where the fathers name should be on the marriage certificate it usually (but not always) means that she was illegitimate. Kath. x

Deryn FreeBMD has a lot of births, marriages and deaths references with which you can order the certs. http://freebmd*.rootsweb*.com/cgi/search*.pl remove * before using and scroll down to find the search form. FreeBMD is not yet complete and has fewer records for the 20th century than the 19th. As you know your gran was around in 1891 you can look for her in the census there to get a clearer idea of her age which will help in tracing her birth certificate. If there's no father on the wedding cert, there may not be one on her birth cert, but at least you will have her mother's name to go on. nell

Nudge Nudge Wink Wink :-) Hello, I am very frustrated today. Got my Grandparents marriage cert in the post - it doesn't name her father! That was the whole reason I ordered it!!!! Now what do I do. It also says she was 19 when married in 1901 but the census in 1901 says she was 16. It is the correct Marriage as I know my Grandads occupation and that agrees and his dad was a baker and I have now found him. How am I going to find any connection now for my Gran? What are the best sites to look up deaths etc. I have not done this for a few months and have forgotten the ones I used to use. Thanks for the Tips I know you are going to give and the sites.......
