Debi Coone Report 23 Oct 2004 22:18

The above census has just gone online. This database is an index to approximately 10% of the individuals enumerated in the 1851 census of the United Kingdom. See below the countys there at present.

there is no mention of it in the recent items of Ancestry I fell upon it by chance in doing a lookup for another GC member for the name Thomas Bastow and it appeared in the list of census's. Good luck everyone - so far I've not found any of mine :( But it does say it's only 10% of it , so if they keep adding to it we're be laughing lol Much happiness Debi

Hi, The 10% extract was compiled - by the LDS I think - as pilot sceme quite some time ago and has been available on disc from various places. It's not likely that it will be added to. Gwynne

They have started 1851 great, has 1861 been started yet do you know that's the one I am waiting for before I join. Irene

Twinkle Report 24 Oct 2004 11:50

Irene, it's not the full 1851 census, just an index. Ancestry aren't starting a full transcription of it or 1861. They are still finishing 1871 and 1901, and rumour has it they're going to do 1881 afterwards.

McDitzy

McDitzy Report 24 Oct 2004 12:00

Why would they transcribe the 1881? It's already free! They haven't transcribed the 1880 for the US.... Grrrrrr, get on with the 1861 will you Ancestry!!! Chloe

McDitzy Report 24 Oct 2004 12:01

Is this the same 1851 index that already available for free on the internet? (I think it's free, haven't looked for it for ages!)

Twinkle

Twinkle Report 24 Oct 2004 12:06

Chloe, they will be putting up the images with 1881. I too would prefer 1861 to be done first!

Janet 693215

Janet 693215 Report 24 Oct 2004 12:12

I would like them to do the images of 1881 for the Shoreditch or Greenwich area as my lot are there somewhere but horrendously mistranscribed. But once they've done that they can do the 1861 and I can find out if they were still in Southampton or further afield!

Angela Report 24 Oct 2004 12:21

I wish they would finish off 1871 first before thinking of doing anything else. 1881 is pointless as it is already free. I have also had difficulty today in viewing marriage index entries on ancestry. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have put 3 messages on here and they have all dissapeared. I am a guest on ancestry and after a couple of attempts have found it. Once you get into the box Census, dont hit uk census, hit the more button underneath. I put in Broughton and one on the choices was the 1851. Once on the 1851 changed names in the box below so it remained in that year. You get name, place of census but not place of birth. You do get the age.
