I dont know if this will help but I have ordered quite a few cert for my irish relatives the site is www.groireland.ie/ The General Register Office at Dublin you can print off the order form and as long as you put the town where you think they were born you will be alright. If yours is wexford then it will be in the Co of Wexford. and as long as you put Dublin I would think that that will be enough. Marilyn.

Knowing the denomination of your ancestors may help narrow down the search for a parish.

Giles There is this Ordering Service - I don't know if it's any use http://www.genfindit.*com/ireland.html

You are going to need the exact birth date and place for your ancestor and believe me having done a lot of Irish family history in both Ireland and the rest of the British Isles you will not get very far without the exact facts. You would not expect to get very far here with John Brown London!! Try to google some understanding of Irish Family History. Ireland was divided into Baronies then Townlands and then parishes. If you go to somewhere like Genuki Ireland and google in Baronies/Townlands and Parishes and run off maps of the Barony and Townsland maps of your areas of interest. Once you have all started to UNDERSTAND where the Irish are coming from you might then begin to get somewhere. If you want to know where any place is in Ireland the best index is: 1851 General Alphabetical Index to Townlands/Towns/Parishes and Baronies of Ireland. Remember that most little villages in Ireland have names in common with many other villages so get yourself maps of your own interest areas. Giles Wexford is quite a big county in the South East of Ireland and its capital town is Wexford and in 1798 there was a big rebellion there!! You will need to know the exact area of Wexford they came from to be able to order up any certificates in the same way as you would not be able to order up a certificate here if you just put Jonn Smith Buckinghamshire. Dublin is like London the capital of S. Ireland and is a big City on the East side of Ireland. On the Southern part of that city is a suburb of Dublin called Inchicore and it is many many miles away from Wexford! Please do look at some maps!! Knowing the denomination is essential for pre 1864 BMD but post 1864 this is unimportant. Janet

Shaz, These are some of the certificates I need to order:- Philip Lawrence McElroy, Born 1897 in Dublin Ellen McElroy, Born 1908 in Wexford or Dublin Una Bernadette McElroy, Born 1935 in Dublin What are my chances of ordering these certificates overseas, based on the little information I have?

Giles Was the ancestor you are looking for born before 1875 if so you may find him on the IGI and this may help you to know when and where he was born. Shaz :-)

Looking at that list, there appears to be (7) seperate registration districts just for Dublin alone, including Dublin North and Dublin South. In that case, there's not much chance I will ever know the exact district my ancestor's births were registered, unless I search the Indexes. Thanks Geoff! Atleast I'm now more familiar with Irish places...

Giles In Ireland like anywhere else a person is registered in the district where they are born so if your ancestor came from Somewhere in Wexford then his birth would have been registered in Wexford. If he came from somewhere in Dublin then he would have been registered in Dublin. I am assuming that your ancestor was born after statutory registration began? If he was born before then you are really going to have to know the exact location of his birth. Who is it you are looking to get a certificate for and what year was he born? By the way Giles I am afraid that not all birth certs from the 1800's are available for Irish births. Shaz :-)

Shaz, I'm simply looking to order some birth certificates for my Irish ancestors, so I need to know what district they were registered. Looking at another GR member's entries, my ancestors came from the county of Dublin. However, according to my sources, they came from the county of Wexford. Whether this falls under the same registration district as Dublin, I do not know, but I need to find out before I go about ordering the certificates. Could Inchicore be a registration district? For example, in England, London is not a district, so would the whole of Dublin be a district?

Giles I can only fine an 'Inch By Gorey' in Wexford. Inchicore is definately a place in Dublin. Do you already have a document that states that your ancestor comes from Inchicore in Wexford or did you find the info online at all? Shaz :-)

Giles Belfast belongs to Antrim as far as I know.. anyone else out there can correct me if I am wrong :-) The reason it is very difficult to trace records in Ireland is due to some political thing that happened years and years ago and a lot of Irish records were actually destroyed! As well as this there was a very bad fire in some record office in Belfast early on in the 1900's which destroyed a lot more records. To trace Irish ancestors your best bet would be to take a look at the Irish Origins site and take it from there. Unless of course you plan on visiting Ireland at all and then if you know what parish you family came from you could visit maybe the churches or cathedrals over there. Shaz :-)

Marion, I know that Inchicore is an official place of some sort because my Ancestor is supposedly from that area, but Google cannot tell me how Inchicore relates to other places in Ireland. I've just seen some kind of Irish map, and it appears that Counties are like major Cities in England. Apparently, Wexford and Dublin are 2 different counties on the East side of Ireland; Does this mean they are also 2 seperate districts for recording Births, Marriages and Deaths? Paul, so you reckon there is an Inchicore in both Wexford and Dublin? If so, then that doesn't help my research very much... :( Is Inchicore a town of some sort? I am still very confused about places in Ireland. Why does the 1901 Irish Census website not have Dublin listed among it's places, but they have a whole section for Wexford? Which Northern Irish county does Belfast belong to?

Paul

Paul Report 23 Oct 2004 18:50

Inchicore in Dublin and Inchicore in Wexford are two entirely different places. Googling brings up the Dublin area more then anything else, but yes, there is a place called Inchicore in Wexford. Paul

Giles Report 23 Oct 2004 18:36

I saw "Inch" listed under Wexford in some 1901 Census parishes, but if you Google "Inchicore", you will see this is a proper place in Ireland with their own University etc.. What's the difference between a county and town? How does Wexford relate to Dublin? You say that records are difficult to trace in Ireland, but all birth certicates from the late 1800's are available, correct?

Wexford is the name of a county in Ireland but I'm afraid I cant help much more than that... things tend to get difficult when research takes you back to Ireland apparently :-) Shaz :-)

I have an Irish ancestor who came from either Inchicore or Wexford. Firstly, would both these places be described as parishes, towns or cities in Ireland? Secondly, would my ancestor's birth index fall under the district of Dublin? I don't think Wexford or Inchicore could be the name of a major district... Any help would be much appreciated!
