I have been searching for my GGgrandad who, according to his sons birth cert in 1881, is Percival Charles Gray. I have hunted all through 1837 for either his marriage to Sarah Rhodes or his death (according to sons birth cert was dead by 1902), I have not managed to find either. I have found a Percival Charles Gray born 1855 in Sussex and Crista managed to find him for me living in Islington (where his son was born) in 1871 with his grandparents. He is the only Percival Charles Gray that I have managed to find in the births index, I can find no trace of him in 1881 when my GGgrandad was in the Royal engineers and he was in the right area, Islington, on the 1871. Would it therefore be safe to assume this is the same person? The only problem then being, how do I find out anything about Sarah?! Sue:-)

Hi Kath, Thank you for looking for me. I did find that one and I did wonder about him because he seemed to fit but my Percival married a Sarah Rhodes according to sons birth cert and in 1881 he was a corperal in the Royal Engineers, Charles Percival would have only been 17 at that time :-( To make matters worse, it appears that he left the Engineers and became a traveller as that was his occupation on sons marriage cert.

My opinion would be to claim this to be the right person and then seek corroborative evidence. If in the future you find evidence to disqualify him then of course you would have some evidence of who his replacement should be. For over 35 years I believed my 4th ggmother to have been Elizabeth Mallion Dowsett. This month I found out (via a GR member) from the 1851 Census that in fact my 4 ggma had been Elizabeth Havens. Good hunting, Jim

Thanks Jim, I think it would be safe to pencil him in so to speak. The other thing that 'fits' is that the Percival born in Sussex had a father who was a house decorator and That is what my Percival's son did for a living. Sorry to hear about your 35 years on the wrong person, I knew someone else that did the same thing, years of work, certs, etc all on the wrong person. On the plus side, You've got a whole new family to investigate. Sue:-)
