Brenda, Thanks to your encouragement I went back to my disc and had another trawl! I tried a couple of things and hey presto - there they were!!!! the surname of BIRCH having been turned into BORIH. I now have four more sisters for my husband's GGGrandfather.

Nothing is perfect, and you are looking at an indexed transcript of the original census. If it is organised like the 1881 census index, you should be able to view neighbours, so can examine every household for Foleshill, which might throw up a mistranscription. Some families do just disappear. They might be in the local workhouse, listed only by initials, or have set off to visit Aunty Fanny in the next county. London censuses are full of comments like "lodger took census form", so some people don't get noted down at all. Brenda

How accurate is this census, do we know? I have a copy which I have searched several times for a family. They are not there. BUT on a later census - 1871- the parents and five children are in W Yorkshire and they all have a birthplace of Foleshill, Warwickshire. I am not too happy about this overall statement as I know the father was born in Ireland in 1816, but I have found two of the children on the 1837 online website and they were registered in Foleshill in 1849 and 1852. Still looking for the other three.
