on a birth certificate i have just got hold of . the fathers name is down as christy is this short for enything. i always took it to be a girls name can enyone help jackie

Hi Jackie I have just 'googled' this and it is a girls or boys name, of Irish/Scottish origin and means 'A follower of Christ, a Christian'. Sam

Some Christy's are short for Christopher - I know a teenager called Christy. Also, the disabled Irish writer Christy Brown. It is possible your relative was just called Christy in its own right. Another idea is that it was short for Christian. Nell

If someone gave a nickname, the registrar would probably query it. Depending on the period, there is a possibility that a surname is being used as a forename - like Sidney. Brenda

We have a "Christie" in our tree. He was born in Scotland and that is how his name is registered. Christine
