There are often threads about how to find a particular place. Here are some useful links to save having to ask (and by all means, add more)...

http://www.multimap.*com/ (which also has places other than UK) http://www.streetmap.*co.uk/ (the name says it all, really) http://www.ordnancesurvey.*co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ which has a direct link to http://www.old-maps.*co.uk/ which gives you a 19th century map of the area you've found on Get-a-Map. I do have some problems with the OS site - it doesn't seem to find some quite obvious places at times (couldn't come up with Swindon today!), so I start by getting the area with Multimap and then use that info to get what I want out of the OS site. Multimap & Streetmap are also useful for simply finding out where somewhere is if you're trying to get there yourself! hope this helps someone Christine

I've found it invaluable to have a) a road map of Great Britain and b) a big road map of Greater London. nell

It is a source of amazement to me that anyone can be brave enough to venture into territory which is unknown to them and then to do so without any map or atlas! Now that there are street atlases of individual counties, life is even more reassuring for me - so long as I have the relevant one! Luckily, my husband is a mapaholic. Christine

I think ukvillages.co.uk wants to use scripts so not displaying any information on any villages on my PC - I block scripts unless absolutely essential. It looks like one of many commercial websites that can be a real nuisance when trying to find information on places. We once tried seaching on a place where a friend lives in the Western Isles. GOOGLE gave long lists of sites offering to tell me the names of solicitors, plumbers, electricians etc etc in this village. There are only about a dozen houses and not even a shop! GOOGLE seems to be plagued by these commercial sites that set out to catch out a as many searches as possible, I often find VIVISIMO gives a better search. To find a place in England I usually start with the 1:50000 map in my own PC but then I try http://www.gazetteer.*co.uk, there is a similar site for Welsh place names. If it is an old place name or perhaps an old building then in Scotland and Wales I try the RCAHMS & RCAHMW sites as often there will be a match on the name. Unfortunately England does not have equivalent databases. Martin
