Can a soldier become a tailor???

My g g grandfather, John Irwin was a soldier in 1862, when my g granny was born. He was born in Ireland. I found a John Irwin aged 64 in 1901 at Bradford which is where his daughter was living at the same time with her family. Only trouble is that this John Irwin is a tailor.

I dont see why not! Perhaps he was a tailor when he joined up and just went back to it afterwards.

Yes my gggggranfather was a tailor before he joined the Royal Horse Artilley and carried on when he left. They did not necessarily fight but soldiers did need uniforms

I can confirm that there are/were tailors in the army when I served in the 60's, I was attached to a guards regiment and was part of the quatermasters staff, where one could find all the odds and sods like tailors mechanics and cooks. xx Dave

My Great Great granfather was in the Army from about 1862 till 1882 then he was a coal merchant then he was a housing Agent in 1991. then in 1901 he was a tailor and then finaly a Licenced Victular.

My father was in the Royal Artillery and was a soldier but became a Tailor whilst in there, so yes it is possible. Jayne
