I have an ancestor James Cracknel born in 1834 in Birmingham and married to a Winifred Gregg in 1856 in Birmingham on the 1881 census I can only find a Winifred Gregg living in Bristol and by 1891 and who was born in Bristol in 1833 he is married to a Mary who was born in Gloucestor in 1834 can any body give some advice please. I did not think divorce was an option for the working classes in victorian times |

Hi, The transcription of the 1881 isn't very good so they could have been mistranscribed. You are right divorce was expensive and there were very few per year. Gwynne |

Hi Sorry, if I'm barking up the wrong tree here butyour thread isn't very clear to read. Have you found Winifred on the 1891 census? If not perhaps she dies before then so her husband remarried? Sam |

Perhaps the Winifred Gregg on the 1891 census was a different person and your Winifred had died? Her husband had remarried after her death? |
