Hi Is there someway i could check details about someone who worked as a railway signalman? My great x2 grandfather was one and i've only got his name and occupation from the marriage certificate. Thanks Gill

Hi, there is a site for railway workers, though sorry I cant remember it now. I think it may be on the Rootsweb site. I think if you google railway workers you will come up with it. They have lists and advice on finding your ancestor who worked on the railway. Just a matter of googling Im afraid.

If you say which town he lived in, I might be able to tell you which railway he worked for.

Most of the railway personnel archives are at Kew. You can search the http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk website to get an idea of which records you're after. The staff at are very helpful - but make sure you pick up the right ref if there's more than one! - I ended up with three enormous tomes that were the wrong part of the alphabet because I'd misunderstood. Will have to go back again. Christine
