I was thinking that too, like a variation on "bat man" that officers had?

Is it a bird? is it a plane?

Geoff - That sounds really possible! Definitely something to think about :) Thanks

I had been thinking this before, but since you said "butler" I was wondering if he was some sort of manservant for the posh boys at the school.

The gentleman in question was living in Rugby, an industrial town in Warwickshire, towards the end of the 19th century (and into the 20th century). He later becomes a Butler. I don't know of any woodlands particularly near here so I'm not sure about him being a woodsman.

Sarah Usual stab in the dark from me - how about a woodsman (forester)? French for wood is Bois, mispronounced/anglicised becomes boys. Ian

I was doing a lookup for someone in my local library (see my topic about Rugby on the Record Office board) and one of the people has the occupation Boysman. Does anyone know what this is? I couldn't see any previous posts about this and I googled and found nothing.
