MOD document retention policy

Has anyone heard of this policy. I applied for a RAF service record and the reply came back quote " Almost all of the documents have been destroyed in accordance with the MOD document retention policy. However RAF Form 543 -Record of Service-is still held and a copy is attached. This basically states name, number and a few dates. All these details you could fit onto 2 post it's. Without going into details on this living person has anyone else come across this. Served during 1950's Pat

Patricia If the serviceman is still living the MOD will not release service records to anyone else other than that serviceman. If deceased then only to the surviving next of kin. Ian
