Need help with an elusive ancestor!

Hi, I am hoping someone much more knowledgable than me can help me with an ancestor I really am stuck finding info on. I have Richard John NEARY born East Indies/India c1862. He married in London in 1891 and on marriage cert father is Stephen NEARY, occupation "Gentleman" (sounds like a posh way of saying "doesn't do much" to me!). I can't find any other records for either Neary on any website I have looked at. All the ones with Indian records seem to be military related. The only guess I have made is they may be something to do with the silk trade, as Richard is a "silk warehouse man" on the 1901 census. Any advice much appreciated!

The East India Company had its own registers of births, marriages etc. and they are now in The British Library. There may be some clues there. Is it possible that Neary might be transcribed Neery or Meary? nell

Michelle Go to the Records Office messageboard and see Gemma's thread "India records" now!

I will certainly have a look in the British library, sounds a definite possibility. Yes, probably very likely there are mistranscriptions, will have another thorough trawl through the sites. Thanks for advice.
