Carole Thank you so much for all the info and your time. I think you have managed to prove to me that this Annie H is not mine. Only my Annie married in 1883 and Father was Robert Spilsbury Self. (and still alive so it seems) Annie Hester was still living at home, single on the 1891. I can only imagine that George Spilsbury Self and Robert Spilsbury Self were brothers or cousins that both perhaps married and named their daughter Annie (just to confuse me) My next stage will be to try and get birth certs for both Robert & George if I can ever find them and of course my Annie. Thanks again Chris If you have any ideas where I can go from here. Would be grateful.

You probably already have this from the 1881 Census online: Hester F.A. SELF Head W Female 80 Limehouse, Middlesex, England Mary Ann SELF Daur In Law W Female 40 Limehouse, Middlesex, England Annie H. SELF Gr Daur U Female 16 Poplar, Middlesex, England Pupil Teacher Lottie A. SELF Gr Daur U Female 14 Poplar, Middlesex, England Still at 4 Bath St, Poplar. And here possibly is Hester's death on Free BMD: March quarter 1883 SELF Hester Frances A. 82 Poplar 1c 498

Don't know if you have them on the 1891: RG12 Piece 332 Enum Dist 17 Folio 92 Page 31 4 Bath Place, Poplar Mary A. SELF, Head, Wid, 50, Living on own means, b. London Limehouse Annie H., daur, S, 26, School Teacher, employed, b. London Poplar George J. PARDON?, Boarder, S, 36?, Chief ?? Royal Navy, employed, b. Dorset Pudd?? Is this the marriage you have from BMD? December quarter 1891 Annie Hester SELF Poplar 1c 1125 I would guess the discrepancy in Annie's second initial in the Census would be down to the cockney accent - Hester and Ester!

Hi Chris, Couldn't find a Blount St in either Stepney or Poplar in 1861. Checked the 1871 for Bath Place: RG10 Piece 584 Folio 74 Page 29 4 Bath Pl, Poplar Ester SELF, Mother, W, 70, No occupation, b. Limehouse Mary A., daur in law, W, 29, no occupation, b. Limehouse Annie E., Gd daur, 6, scholar, b. Poplar Lottie A., Gd daur, 6, scholar b. Bromley My first thought was that Annie had a twin sister, but as their birthplaces are different and they are both grandaughters to Ester, perhaps they were cousins. At least you have the name of George's mother. I only have the 1881 transcription (which you can now view online) not the actual images.

Hi Carole They married in Stepney. I was going to say 1861 but I wonder if you have access to 1881 (cant find it on familysearch site) census? As, if I could find the family in Blount Street, I might be able to say for sure the name of Annies father Thanks and g;night Chris

Hi Carole Thank you so much for the info. It does look like that could be them. Can I ask you to check another address for me when Annie married they were living at Blount Street. She at Number 76 and her groom Richard Blake(b1862) at Number 72. I am still trying to check that her father was indeed George and not Robert as on wedding cert. I find it so confusing that her brother was called Robert George. Perhaps he changed his name? Thanks again for your help Chris

Hi Chris, Is this them? 1861 Census RG10 Piece 308 Folio 13 21 Bath Street, All Saints Poplar George S. SELF, Head, Mar, 20, Rent Collector, b. Middlesex Poplar Mary A, wife, Mar, 19, b. Middlesex Limehouse Mary I? G, daur, 5ms, b. Middlesex Poplar Bath Place is the next address down, but no other SELFs there. Will check further down street and get back to you! Carole Hi again, Just gone through all Bath Place/Street/Cottages and no other SELFs found. However, I must add that several pages were illegible so I just hope that they were not hiding there. I couldn't read the names on those pages, but I didn't see anything that resembled SELF. The pages were very dark and that coupled with the enumerators scrawl didn't help! PS Was looking for your Annie who you said was born 1854, but think it was a typo as your original post said 1864. Hope the details I have found help you then!

Annie Self was born in 1864. When she married her Fathers name on the certificate was Robert Spilsbury Self. I have just received what I think is her birth certficate and her Father is down as George Spilsbury Self. I believe her mother is Mary Ann. Can anyone please check the 1861 census (as I have a marriage for George and Mary Ann for 1859) to make sure that they are not two different families. Thanks Chris
