I've found 4 children only by their death certificates as no births were registered. Don't know if there were any more as they were in Scotland pre 1854. Even their parents weren't registered which makes it another brick wall!!!!

There's also the fact that some people didn't register at all. Apparently compulsory registration wasn't instituted in 1837. (I think Nell probably knows the cut-off date for when it did become compulsory.) There are also people who didn't register until long after the event. (I think I read of one extreme case of 40 years!) Christine

It should always remembered that some people lied about birth dates to avoid penalty. So if you get a date that doesn't fit this could be the reason. It was 42 days/6 weeks. Bob

There does not seem to be such a time scale in the past, I even have 4 births registered at the same time in 1946 when I know for a fact that they were all different ages!

Birth, Deaths and Marriages would be registered for GRO index purposes in the qtr following when the occasion took place.
