Is it a bird? is it a plane? Report 16 Oct 2004 16:53

Would someone who had this occupation need to have been trained? I have an ancestor who is listed as a labourer in 1871, a tailor in 1881 and then a general labourer in 1891. Has the 1881 been mis-transcribed? His brother worked in a linen warehouse at one time so there may be cloth connections.

Yes tailors were trained, and often moved districts in the course of doing so, I seem to have several tailors amongst my ancestors, not a skill passed down to me thought!!

Hi Sarah My ancestor, Robert Read, worked in a Linen Warehouse in Southwark. His son went on to be a Commercial Traveller - Drapery. None of them were tailors, if that's any help! Natalie

Hi Sarah, Firstly he would be an apprentice tailor, then a journeyman tailor before finally become a master tailor, normally someone who owns their own shop. I have a few tailors in my family, my grandfather and greatfather were both master tailors. Nicky

My gr gr grandfather was a tailor but i believe for the Army i have found him on census,s going back to 1871 ,but still have been unable to find his birth, all i know is that he was born in 1818 in Gibraltar so his father must have been a Military man .Will keep looking . Val

Thank you to everyone who has replied! I really think that the 1881 census must be a mis-transcription! Its the only reference I have found of him being a tailor. I don't have any references to him being an apprentice of any sorts. The only census return I don't have for him is the 1861 census when he would have been about 20, so maybe that will clear it up? Thank you all again! Everyone is just great on this site!

I suppose if it did turn out that he was an apprentice, my next question would have to be, why not his brother too? His older brother doesn't seem to have had a trade. He was a warehouseman by the time he was 20 and during his life he was also a coal labourer, a bleacher, and a railway dragman.
