Carol I think they choose those sort of headers & narrative precisely because it looks plausible. I nearly lost out on a time-sensitive competition win (tickets to a single concert) because I got an e-mail from BBC headed "CONGRATULATIONS!!!!" - or something pretty similar. We had just started using Canit and it recognised lots of threatening attributes and sequestered the e-mails with headings like that. Fortunately, I got in touch by phone and managed to get the info. The concert was fantastic, in case you're wondering - The Kings Singers. Christine

Christine - have you thought that a non descript message like "your document is attached" is sometimes the very thing we say when sending an image to someone. Maybe we should be a bit more imaginitive. Brian, have tried to access your email from your isp direct rather than going through outlook express.

I reckon Christina's suggestion is a very good one! Judy-in-the-States is exceedingly knowledgeable and competent and will give very good advice. The only thing I would say is that a number of viruses have been set up so that they use the host-computer's e-address-book, not only as a mailing list to propagate themselves, but also as a source of false addresses to masquerade as coming from a reliable source. You can sometimes deduce whose machine is infected by the lists of names being circulated. That doesn't tell you where the virus really came from. Of course, it may be over-active anti-virus systems, but you'd need to be very sure before curtailing them! Christine

What sort of headers are in these e-mails with attachments you're not being allowed to open? Normally you'd only get that kind of message if the attachments were virus-infected. It's very common to send viruses with e-mails with titles/narrative such as "your document is attached" or something nondescript like that. If it's happening with things which you are confident are OK, then is this a new manifestation of a virus itself? You could try going to one of the sites like Symantec (Norton) or McAfee or something and put some key words into their site-search and see if anything comes up. Christine
