I am posting the following, received by a fellow researcher who was kind enough to share the reply she received from the South African Department of Defence's Documentation Centre, which might clarify things for other researches. "From the information provided in your letter, it is evident that xxxxxxxxx served with a British or locally raised colonial unit during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). During that time the British Government dealt with the administration of personnel files and other related aspects of such military service in South Africa. Today the Army Record Centre and/or the Public Records Office in the United Kingdom are the Custodians of these records and for that reason the Documentation Centre will not be able to assist you with regard to this member's service record. You are however advised to direct your enquiry to the relevant institution abroad:" (a) (Personnel Records: British Army) Army Records Centre Ministry of Defence CS (RM) 2b Bourne Avenue Hayes, Middlesex, UB3 1RF UK (b) (Personnel Records: locally raised British Colonial units/ pre-1912) South African National Archives Private Bag X236 Pretoria 0001 RSA (c) Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository Private Bag X9012 Pietermaritzburg 3200 RSA (d) Cape Archives Repository Private Bag X9025 Cape Town 8000 RSA
