Just had a look on rootsweb. Unfortunately it still doesn't help me with my Flight or Slight surname. Just wish I could tell the difference between the "F" and "S" might know what name or derivative I'm looking for!!!

Personally I think all the people who ever wrote a census went on to become doctors!

Go to Ancestry home page Census records and image Click on this or a census year e.g. 1901 Left hand side Handwriting help Click on this and a pop up window appears with the chart You can’t copy it but you can right click and save picture as…. It can definitely give you some more ideas on how to search for your missing/miss transcribed relations e.g. A capital N could be transcribed as a K

Many thanks for that, I'm a member of Ancestry but didn't realise they had this facility. Have just been over to have a look, and can't find the handwriting tip anywhere on the site! Please could you tell me where to find it? Many thanks, Mandy :)

Sorry Jeanie I don't know if you can access it with guest membership, as I have full access, but its worth a try.

Thanks I'll give that a go. I have a name that looks like Ainley or Amley (a girl) as her father was 'broad Yorkshire' he probably said to the enumerator she's Amily (Emily)!! Thanks Jacquie

If you have access to Ancestry, they have a chart that shows 4 different ways to write each letter of the alphabet, this may help you in deciphering the actual sheets, or any old documents, Also help in finding miss transcribed names
