Hi Caroline. Great to see another person devoted to the cause! Basically start by gathering anything and everything about the person you are researching, things like photos, birth, marriage and death certificates tell you a lot about the person, where they lived who the parents were and occupations, who the witnesses were etc. Input this info into some computer program (I use Family Tree Maker 10 which is quite easy to use). The advantage is you can see the relationships of all the people in the database you have created. When you have say 2 or 2 generations back to 1881 look at the census online at familysearch.com or buy the cd pack yourself. Eventually you will end up going to the archives in some county to find the primary evidence such as church records, wills, the trade directories (yellow pages equivalent in the 19th century) if you ancestors were in a trade. Document everything so you know where you have been and what sources you have consulted. This helps if you have to stop and pick it up again sometime later (ie 6 months). I have been researching 6 years and have 10,000 people because every twig, branch, marriage etc is on the tree as going sideways helps going back, every snippet of info. A good site is GENUKI which explains a lot and how to get started. Hope this helps.

Also go to the section 'New to GR' at the bottom of the green panel on the left of your screen. Good luck! Mandy :)
