The instruction for 1841 was to round down ages above 15. If they rounded up then it would be an error. Some put exact ages. Bob |

I disagree, John! Loads of parish records for my families in Yorkshire are not on the IGI!!! Also on the 1841 census its Yes (born in county) No (born in England) S (born in Scotland) I (born in Ireland) and F (foreign) OOPs, just realised I've missed out Wales - sorry but they come under England too! Hi Diane, 1841 was the earliest census with full details but bear in mind this was early victorian and there are some pitfalls to watch out for. The age was generally rounded up or down by 5 years except the infants. Where Born was either in the county or outside so you do not know where in the world! The address is ok usually, sometimes the names can be wrong or the relationship to head of household is wrong (perhaps they were covering up some illegitimate children!) Good news is that the IGI records are complete for the whole of yorkshire (or near enough) as some counties are very patchy indeed. Hope this helps. |

There were earlier censuses from 1801 , but the 1841 is the earliest which included names. The earlier ones were just head counts. |
