Annie may be a problem, but her husband should be easier. Do you have ANY references for someone who might be him? It is possible that Annie was a widow, which is why you can't find a cross reference to her if the birth certificate simply shows her maiden name. If you have an address, you could try looking in directories and electoral rolls to see how far back they are recorded at that address, which might suggest a marriage date. Another alternative is that they don't marry, or marry after the birth of one or more children. Brenda

Just thought - if you're talking Oxford, their FHS has a lot of stuff very well-organised. http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ You might get some tips/info via them? Christine

Have you tried different versions of their surnames? I was being driven demeted by the same problem and could not find a marriage between Mary Jane Laxton and John Parker, eventually found that Mary Jane had been recorded in the registers as Laston - obviously someone had a lisp!!

Hi If you know roughly whereabouts they were married, have you tried the local register office? Some of them have online searchable sites which are growing by the week. This site has a lot of relevant links: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ The GRO index is a quarterly transcription of the local registers - i.e. an opportunity for mis-transcription or omission. There's no difference in the certificate prices, but if you find the relevant record online, you can click on the reference for a partially-completed application form which you print, complete, and post off with your payment. The cert arrives, in my experience, at least as fast as from GRO-online. Because you're posting a physical piece of paper, there's more room to add extra info to make sure you get the right one.
