Hi The root of the word simply means someone who does things on behalf of someone else. In modern terms, celebrities have agents who organise their professional bookings (and take a cut!). In many cases in the past, titled men would not demean themselves by hands-on involvement in the running of all their family property, so they had an agent who followed their general instructions and got things done. A soldier/sailor would have an agent to look after his earnings while he was away - prize money and the like. They had to be picky about whom they chose for such a financially-vulnerable activity. Could be anything really. What sort of area did he live in - local industry may give a clue. Could be shipping agent, insurance agent, lots of things. Check the census for 1851 if you can.

I'm looking for a bit of helping regarding the profession which my great great grandfather had. His profession was listed on my great grandfather's marriage certificate as 'agent'. Can anyone shed any more light on this for me? This certificate is from 1855. Thanks
