Hi, I've got my family tree on Family Tree Maker 10 and when I ask for a Kinship report I get several different enteries. For example my relationship to Suckling Howes (cool name !!) says Clare Bullock 6th Great - grandaughter Civil VIII Canon 8 Could anyone tell me what the Civil and Canon mean and what would I be to Suckling Great Granddaughter x ? Hi Clare, well wouldnt you just be x 6? Civil and Canon, wouldnt that be the general law and the church law?

Counting back from Suckling to me makes 6 great grandfathers but what does the Canon and Civil 8 mean ?? Clare.xx PS. Please excuse my denseness this morning but I was up half the night chasing old Suckling around Norfolk - husband says I'm like a dog with a bone !!!

Perhaps it is number of degrees of separation between the pair of you. If I am right, I think you and a cousin should rank as 4, your father and your cousin would be 3.

I think you right Geoff there would be 8 generations or degrees of seperation between me and Suckling. Cheers Clare.xx

Hi where do you live? Suckling is quite a common name in Norfolk. Have you tried the on-line norfolk transcription archive site to trawl the parish records?

Hi Heather, The Norfolk connection came as a complete surprise a few days ago. My fathers family came from Staffs, Derbys and Leics and we had no idea we had ancestors in Norfolk. I know live in Sussex and my parents are in Yorkshire, so getting to Norfolk might prove tricky. Was Suckling really a common first name ?? Very odd people these East Anglians - no offence anyone!! Sorry to be a pain but where about can I find these online transcripts?? Thanks for the info Clare.xxx

IGI has 78 entries for Suckling as a first name - as Heather. says, mainly in Norfolk

Hi Geoff, I've been through IGI and most of them belong to the same family - mine !!! I've got one family who called 3 of their children Suckling Howes. All those in Sideshand are mine - aren't I lucky !! Clare.xx

Hi Clare, in FTM10 look at the help index as it explains the difference between Civil and Canon, one of them counts evey person from you to the other person ie back to the common ancestor then forward to that person, the other law looks at the direct bloodline common ancestor which is why their are 2 different relationships. It took me a while to get this in my head!
