	Mother's name always appears (unless the child is a foundling I suppose), but criteria for father's name is the same as today - only if married or attending the registrar's office with the mother. Most illegitimate births do not show a father's name, unlike today. The mother's name will show as 'Ann Smith formerly Jones' if she is married, or just as 'Ann Jones' if she is not. Hope this helps. 	Hi, The mother's first name(s) will be on the birth cert as well as her maiden name. Gwynne
