Surrey,Sussex,Essex, Shropshire and Middlesex have up to 15% births unregistered 1837-75. As he was christened it's even more likely that he was not registered. Bob

Thanks Mandy. As there is nothing in 1837 are there any CDs that I can buy to find this Stephen George Ruffs birth date?

Margaret, I have some 1837 credits if you'd like me to narrow it down for you. If you haven't already placed your £11 order, email me with the details (in case I don't get back to this board tonight) and I'll look it up for you. Mandy :)

I can't find his birth on Ancestry or FreeBMD. You would need to check on 1837online - maybe someone on the Records page will have some spare credits to look for you. However, back in the early days of registration, I don't think it was compulsory, so you might find his birth was not registered at all. My great-grandmother was born in 1855 and despite extensive searches by myself and another relative I have met through GR, we have never found her birth. If you are lucky enough to find him in the index, you can order the certificate online go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp and follow the instructions. good luck, Carole

To order a birth certificate you can either a) ask the local register office to where the event took place, if you know. They will want a rough idea of the date. b) order from the GRO - for this you need the GRO reference. This is name, year, quarter (Mar/Jun/Sep or Oct -this is when the event was registered, not when it happened), registration district and volume & page no. You can get these details from the GRO index - some of it is transcribed on FreeBMD (google to find), or from the complete set, which are available on microfiche at various libraries & records offices. It costs £7 to order online here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ Or I think you can pay about £11 and they will search the registers for a total of 3 years for you. nell

I will look for the record on Ancestry. If I can get the GRO Index number, you will be able to order it online for £7. Without it, you will have to pay more. Hold on while I look. Carole
