Hello I'm no great expert, but I thought that it was usually possible to save-as GedCom format from most family tree software and that it would then be possible to open it into another package (or even, if you're lucky, load it into GenesReunited!). It would be the equivalent of saving a Word document in "rtf" (rich text format) which would leave out all the fancy background stuff but retain the actual text and text-formatting (tabs, bold, italic, etc) - or, in the case of a family tree, the names and dates etc. Can you ask your relation to save it in a more basic format so that you don't have to use the same software as (s)he does?
