Karen Husband suggests: look around area where uncle/aunt were born - see if you can find William/Sarah. If aunt/uncle's oldest child is 20 and Ambrose only 8 chances are aunt/uncle are older sibling of William or Sarah, so if you can find aunt/uncle's birth, you can check for birth after their's. Hope this makes sense. nell

I've just looked at the 1881 census. As the surname is neither Wallis nor Young, the uncle is not the brother of either Sarah or William. Possible permutations are: Ambrose's father and the aunt are siblings Ambrose's mother and aunt are sisters. How can you connect them? Well, you could look for the aunt's marriage and see if her maiden name was Young (or get one of her children's birth certs for the same info). If it was, then there's a strong likelihood that she is Sarah's sister. You could try to trace her birth to get her and Sarah's parents. If it is Wallis, then she is Ambrose's father's sister, and you can look for her birth to find his parents. Good luck. nell

Possibly William and Sarah are dead by 1881 which is why Ambrose is with relatives. You could look for death certs for the parents. Also, who are Ambrose's relatives in Portsmouth - can you find their births and work out how they are connected to William & Sarah - you might then find out more about them, or find them all together in an earlier census. nell
