Jayne, You can search FreeBMD here: http://freebmd.rootsweb.*com/cgi/search.pl Watch out for the Ancestry advertisement at the top of the page. FreeBMD search results give the register volume (Vol column) and the page (Page column) within that volume. If you click on the Page you will see all the entries on that page. Prior to 1852, up to 4 marriages share the same volume/page for any particular district. After that (with a few exceptions) there are two marriages per page. Hence the search could result in the names up to 8 or 4 people (depending on the year), and any 4 or 2 of these could be the spouse of the person you are interested in. There is no way, from the index, to tell which person is actually the spouse. If you have no other information to go on (e.g. cross referencing a Census) the only option is to buy the marriage certificate from the GRO. Crista

Hi Chloe Always in a Daydream, Sorry got you mixed up with Christa who did an earlier search. Many thanks for your help. Does that mean that their were 4 separate marriages with that reference or does it mean 2 marriages between those 4 people obviously making 2 couples? Sorry to show my ignorance. Also is Free BMD a free site anybody can register on?

Hi Christa, Many many thanks for your help. I know this may sound a little ignorant but does it mean that all those marriages have the same reference, and that the four of them were maried to one of the other 3, so infact two sets? Always in a Daydream On the census record of 1901 it says under place of birth America British subject. I was told it meant parents were British. Hope this helps

Jayne, does it say that Ada was a British Subject just born in the USA? I was thinking that it might be the case that she was naturalised along with her family. There's an index at the FRC that goes up until 1936 for those who were naturalised.

Jayne, There is no BMD index in the US that is available. Each state has it's own rules. Try www.searchsystems.net and select a state to see what is available. Crista

Many Thanks for the replies so far. There appears to be a break of nearly 30 years for William Stubbington after his brith registration but other members can be located and as for Ada Wright we first see her in the 1881 census, then 1891 and 1901, then her death in 1935, but no marriage., all census's say place of birth USA. I have checked on 1837 and ancestry.com, also Mormon records and I have found a couple of possibles in Indiana in 1858, Wisconsin in 1858 where both parents are shown as born in England on census and the other is with an English born father but an American mother, this is from Pennsylvania in 1859. Are there any other routes I could try to beable to locate Ada Wright as the correct one I am looking for? Thanks in anticipation.

Your best bet is to look at 1837online then. If the first child was born in 1877 then you shouldn't have to spend too much to try and find the marriage.

Jayne, Here are the marriages for that reference from FreeBMD. Marriages Mar 1876 Burchell Lucy Midhurst 2b 539 Carver Henry Midhurst 2b 539 Hills Rose Midhurst 2b 539 Stubbington William Midhurst 2b 539 It doesn't look like this is the right one. The William here married Rose and I can find them on the 1881 census. Crista

Where have you looked for the Wright marriage (that matches William Stubbington)? If it is only FreeBMD, then please remember that it isn't complete and just because it has an entry for William, doesn't mean that the person he married is also transcribed in that reference number... does that make sense?

A William James Stubbington born Upham 1852 Shown on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records as being married to Ada (Wright) definitely the right couple, my father is alive and knew them. Ada is shown as born in America and a British Subject. First child was born in approx 1877 another William. I have found a marrige this afternoon in 1876 In MIdhurst but no Wright to match with it - Is it possible that there could be a transcription error with 'Wright'? Will order the certificate and see. If I can find the right mariage then I can find Ada's fathers name (have found some possibles on US census records, can anybody find any other possible marriages around this time for William Stubbington Apart from this between 1852 and 1881 no other records found for William Stubbington senior (although family are in Upham in 1871. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!!!
