Hi Wayne I think you are looking for the tree connected to John Barzilai Cock and the Knight family of Ramsgate. Enter -RNLI Ramsgate on your browser and you will find a most interesting site by Clive Lawford. A wide range of local Lifeboat Info. Famous rescues and part of the Knight family tree with some photos. Don

No I think Trinity House has always been a typical strange British institution and not run by either the Admiralty or HMCG.

Hi Martin, I was thinking about the coastguard in the 18th and 19thC. From the 1830s to the 1920s the Coastguard was run by the Admiralty which I thought was based at Trinty House. An ancestor was a Pilot and I know he had to apply there. He was also a coastguard so that may be why I thought it would be the same place. Gwynne

No Trinity House looks after lighthouses and navigational buoys etc in England and Wales (and probably IoM?) but not Scotland. It is not a government department, it is a charitable organisation. HM Coast Guard is part of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency - I think it is still a government department - UK wide Lifeboats are RNLI - UK and also Ireland. It is a charitable organisation. Martin

Hi Wayne, I've replied on a different thread. The coastguard and the lifeboats are different organisations. For coastguards you need Trinity House which is a government organisation - the workers are paid - Pilots, lighthouses, coastguards etc. The lifeboat men are purely volunteers and funded by a charity.
