Meryl, I've been trying to find out which regiment my grandfather served in in WW1. He was married and had at least 2 children at the time, and my mother (who was born in 1903 and therefore of an age to be aware of what was happening during WW1) talked about him going across the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia. But that is all I know as he never talked about it. He too survived, living until 1963. One of the problems is that the records of surviving servicemen (not officers) were moved to a safe place at the start of WW2. It was bombed, and many records destroyed. The remainder were moved to Kew, where there was a fire at some point. So surviving records are few and damaged. I did contact the local archives office (Oldham in my case), and someone there was kind enough to do a search for me (I live in Canada), but couldn't find MY Harry Schofield. I have just seen some information that indicates that ALL WW1 servicemen were eligible for a military medal at the conclusion of the war. Therefore, I am about to try the National Archives website to see if that is true.

The war graves site is www(.)cwgc(.)org removing brackets. It's an excellent site, very easy to use and with detailed information. Mandy :)

Meryl Try the National Archives website. They have a searchable index of the medal entitlement for WW1 servicemen. Notes to be aware of - I do not think they have yet completed the transcription. They are upto around the letter 'T' I think, but anyway try for yourself. Also there might be a few men with the same names, so do not automatically assume you have the correct individual. Does any family member have his war service medals? They have the name/rank/number and regiment on the rim. Ian

Does anyone know of a site where I can find which Regiment my Husbands Grandad was in, during the first world war? He came from Norwich, Norfolk. Best Wishes and happy hunting, Meryl.
