Please help, how do i find out if any of my ancestors were in prison?

Kelly There's the Black Sheep Index, but as far as I know there is no central, accessible list of prisoners. I only found out that my relative had been in prison when i found him in Broadmoor on the 1881 census! i found that before he was acquitted of murder on the grounds of insanity he had been in Gloucester gaol. Gloucester Record Office has an online index of the gaol register, where I found 3 other family members - one was acquitted of larceny, but 2 others were found guilty of stealing and sentenced to a few months. You could also try A2A, type in your ancestor's name, choose an area and look for County Assizes, or County Courts or Magistrates Courts - Ive found several of mine on there, including one who was sent "beyond the seas for life" for wounding and cutting with a knife. Good luck!
