If you are looking pre 1854 then try scotsorigins*com which is the LDS IGI site that you can search by scottish county and place for free and is very useful before going onto scotlandspeople as it can reduce the number of hits or credits used to find the right entry. It's only for births and marriages OPR's but now gives you the option of purchasing a copy of the entry. I always double check with scotlandspeople and download a copy if there is one - Mind you it doesn't help if the births weren't registered!!!!!!! Could also try scotsfind*org, scots bdm and free census

What you get to view isn't actually a BDM certificate - it's an image of the Register page. Not a huge difference, you might think, but if you're lucky enough to get both of a pair of twins on one page (there are 3 birth records per page) then you only use credits for one image to get both records. (I was lucky like that!) Christine

Hi Maggie, me again! The Scottish site is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ It costs six pounds for 30 credits, which last for 48 hours. It costs 5 credits to view actual image of BDM certs, which you can then print off, which saves you having to send off for it. Scottish statutory registration started in 1855, before that there is the OPR's. On the site there are births 1855-1903, Marriages 1855-1920something and deaths up to the 1950's. There is also 1881,91 and 1901 census. Happy hunting Christine
