Thre's a new book out about almshouses, title and author escape me, but I shall see if I canfind them for you. Almshouses were provided by benefactors (often non-conformist) as a better prospect than the workhouse. You could check on www.a2a.org.uk/ [Access to Archives] to see if/where there are any papers relating to the one you want. nell

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 8 Oct 2004 17:22

I am having similar trouble with Almshouses in Tunbridge Wells. As far as I know, they are usually set up as a charitable endeavour. The occupants are usually those of good character, pillars of the community, churchgoers etc, who have fallen on hard times due to widowhood, disability etc. My mum's cousin lives in one now and she had to be nominated and seconded and I believe she went for an interview. The best thing is to contact either the County Record Office or the Local Studies Library for the area and see if they can tell you which Charitable Trust funds/funded the Almshouses you are interested in. Then you can contact them directly about the records. Good luck!! Maz. XX

Can anybody help, am after info on Alms Houses in particular Redcliffe Bristol, but how did one end up there? were these a church or privately run institutions? Did one have to have money or were they for destitute people? I had 2 relations there in 1850/51 (one died) who would hold records if there are any. Alan
