The records of licences (you had to appear before 2 JPs) would probably be in the local record office. If its in London it may well be in the London Metropolitan Archives, who have a leaflet on this. nell

Hi Caroline A couple of my ancestors were licensed victulars also. I found an entry for them in a local trade directory at the records office. And as I was chatting about it with one of the records office staff she happened to mention that they had records of licenses for some of the pubs. She went into the back and reappeared a few minutes later with some ledgers. Using these ledgers I was able to find out that my 3x great Uncle was the licensee of the pub from 1881 to his death in 1891. His wife then took over the pub for 3 years before moving down the road to another pub which she ran until she remarried in 1900. She then handed the license over to her new husband. Hope you're as lucky as I was Jeanette x

We have found a relative on the 1901 who is listed as a Licencsed Victualler. We also have "family gossip" that this guy possibly ran a particular pub of which we know the name. Our problem is that this pub has now been knocked down, we can't remember who the brewery were at the time of knocking down or where to start looking for to find past landlords...does anyone have any ideas?? We have also done a search on Google by putting in the pub name and/or the rellies name etc...NOTHING!
