Thanks very much for the tip, Gary. The link is: http://www.*gazettes-online.*co.*uk/index.*asp?webType=0 (remove asterisks) I've just found all sorts of records: - my grandfather's & great-uncle's appointments in WW1; the start of my father's RAF career; and the Will announcement for his stepfather - thus giving me some date parameters for other events in the Tree. great! Thanks for those. I think my Dad looked at the Gazette which is how he knows the date but don't think it gave details. I'll obviously have to quiz him further! I thought there might be a site like the First WW one for medals, but it seems not. Thanks for your help folks. Anne

the london gazette recorded most gallantry medal awards and can be viewed on line and searched by name and dates ww1 and ww2 only, you will have to goggle for the web address as iam at work and do not have it to hand, there are some wonderful citations on there

This might help you find the museum you need (once you know which regiment): http://www.armymuseums.org.uk/ If you can't find the right museum from the regimental name you're given, try putting the regimental name into Google - you may find that it's been merged with another regiment under a different name. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to intensify the search! Anne

Anne Have you tried a google search using the name of the medal?

Do you know what regiment the person was in? If so they may have a museum which keeps records of medals awarded and why. Kath

My Dad is trying to find out about a wartime collegue who was awarded a gallantry medal. We know the name of the person and the medal and the date but we don't know WHY it was awarded. Anyone know where we can find out, please? Anne
