In about 1856 would a British subject born in America have had to register the birth anywhere but America? My gt grandmother was born in America in 1856 and has quite a common name Ada Wright so tracing is difficult but maybe easier if I knew she would have been registered elsewhere. I am given to believe that parents were British.

I don't think they HAD to do it, but if they did register with the British Consulate, then there are separate index books which are now on 1837 on-line or at the FRC in London. Maz. XX
