Please can anyone advise me on where to go to search Scottish ancestors? I have searched for ages on one part of my tree and have finally had a breakthrough and discovered them on the London 1851 census! However, I am now stuck again! What I know is as follows: John Sutherland, born circa 1810 - family word has it he was Scottish (he was also a mariner) Not on the 1851, but wife down as married, not widowed. Wife - Elizabeth nee ?, born 1814 Montrose, Forfarshire. Son - Henry born 1839, Montrose, Forfarshire. (3x) other kids born in London, last one found, born 1850 upto now. I guess I am looking for a birth of John (?), but think the best place to start would be the marriage. Henry was the first child, so I would think I am looking for a marriage 1830-1838 to start, concentrating on the above area. Where do I need to look? Many thanks Sarah

Someone correct me if I wrong, but I think you will need to order a film from the LSD . If you go to www(.)familysearch(.)org/ you will find under the Family History Library Catalog under place search Montrose Scotland. It lists the films for the Church of Scotland Parish registers 1615-1854. The one you probably want are the Scotland Angus Montrose Church records: Bapt 1820-1854 Marriages 1820-1854 FHL British Film 993498 You can go to your local Latter Day Saints Family History Centre and order the film.

Try scotsorigins*com first for free before going onto scotlandspeople You can search births/baptism and marriages from the OPR's. This is an LDS IGI site for Scotland where you can search county and place (very handy especially if you know area you're looking for). Click on search births or marriages and before putting search details click on title at top for scotsorigins - not sure if it matters if you don't as the same search form comes up - but just to be on the safe side. There is now an option to purchase a copy of the extract if you want. However if you can't find births/marriages on line then you can do as Christine suggests and go to the LDS FHC. I did find a birth through their films that couldn't find anywhere else. The only problem with going to the LDS FHC is that you may not be able to get a copy of the entry there. (the copier at my local LDS FHC is broken)

Have you looked on Scotlands People - the GRO-Scotland site? You have to pay, but it's very good value - Scottish law allows you to buy images of the actual register pages instead of shelling out for certificates. It works a bit like 1837Online, except that if your credits time-out, they only go into limbo until you pay some more next time. I think the link is on this site, in the Resources. I'm at work just now (lunch break) so haven't got bookmarks here to give you. Christine
