Ok my head is in a real muddle .... My g/grandmother Kate Harrold nee Masters I have her marriage cert which states born Priors Marston Warwickshire 1853 father Henry. On each census and her marriage cert she is shown as Kate. No Kates born that I can find but..... There is one Catharine born to a Henry Masters right year right place but how can i establish that this was really her?? Help please Nikki

I guess the way to confirm this is the right Catherine/Kate is to see from her birth cert what her mother's maiden name was and then look for her mother's marriage to Henry. Have you got her mother's name on any census? nell

How about cross referring the father's occupation on the marriage and birth certs? Do you have her mother's christian name from the census? That can be a checking point for ordering the birth cert too. She may have always been called Kate - may not even have known that her birth was registered as Catharine. If it is a small village then have a look through the whole place to check if there are any other families with the same surname who also may have had a daughter Catharine. Maz. XX

I'd be tempted to find Kate's parents' marriage cert first, then when you send for this birth cert you can use her mother's maiden name as a checking point, so if it isn't the right girl you won't have to pay the full amount for a wrong cert. nell
