I did a lot of checking of old addresses in the summer holiday. The shop where my grandfather had a picture framers is now a bicycle shop, but it is still opposite the library and round the corner from my great-grandmother's. Her house is the same. The house where a great-granddad died is the same as it has a name and date in the fabric of the brick which were several years before he died. However, a road another grandfather lodged is completely different from how it was when he lived there in 1901. nell

I know how you feel Jeanie. We hunted round the streets in Limerick for the birthplace of my father in law's mother only to find it's a Chinese restaurant.

That's a smart move Jill!. I often remind new mums to think about keeping a photo of the baby's first home when they tuck away the birth congratulation cards. It took me ages to track down one of my mother's now demolished birthplace.

When I have an address for an ancestor,I look at the local Estate Agents sites.Sometimes I find a house for sale in that street which gives me an idea of the kind of area my relative lived in, but yesterday I struck lucky and found the actual house was up for sale, so now I have a picture to add to my file. It helps to make things more personal. Jill in Grimsby
