This same thing happened with one of my grandfathers. On his marriage certificate, his father had the same name as him and was 'deceased'. Then when I got his birth certificate, there was no father listed and grandfather had his mother's surname - therefore illegitimate!

Hi, Does he appear on Mary's birth cert? If not he may have been an "invention" on the marriage cert to avoid the embarrassment of illegitimacy. Gwynne

Help needed please, I have a Mary Fox born in Bury Union Workhouse in 1880 with her mum Ann from Dublin. No father is mentioned and the only record I have of him is on Mary's marriage certificate in Haslingden in 1900 as deceased. I have looked everywhere I can think of. elaine
