Hi - Susie Manterfield If you think of the script for David and for Daniel they can look very alike: the v & the n resemble one another, and e or c close to l can look like a d. Were you using transcriptions, or images of the originals?. I'd be inclined to go with Daniel but it would be worth checking the images if you can. Christine

Yes I wish they would make up their minds. My Great gran has birthplace as Liverpool on the 1881 census, and I have her birth certificate as Liverpool 1861, and yet on both the 1891 and 1901 she has Leige, Belgium, which was her mothers birth place.??!??

Try census no 3!!! I have a g grandmother who seemed to have a different birthplace in each census (1851 to1901!) It took me ages to realise that it was really the same place she was talking about. It is a rather extended village with different names for different bits of it. Anne

thank you all for your helpful comments. I will certainly follow all this up. I feel a visit to the Bristol Records Office coming on, as well as the Somerset.

Hi I believe that all those censuses were held 31 March / 1 April give or take a few days (to be on a Sunday). The arithmetic means he could have been born any time from (about) 1 April 1839 to 31 March 1840. You don't mention looking in the June quarter of 1839. I'd be inclined to check that before anything else. I think it was Helen/Nell who remarked that registration wasn't absolutely compulsory until much later in 19th century. Some folks escaped the system. Some were registered exceedingly late - possibly when they had to prove something. And as for place-of-birth: my g-grandfather was born in Maidenhead (1881, 1901) or Ilford (1891). These are hardly neighbouring places, but there's very little doubt that it's the same person - and it's beginning to look as if Ilford's the right one... Just got to get extravagant enough to get a cert. Christine

You could try the 1851 and 1861, I think someone on the boards was offering lookups on these at some time. Ann Glos

Problem is, I cant find his birth. Henry Tainton, Age 61 in 1901, 51 in 1891, 41 in 1881 and 31 in 1871 born Bristol or Nailsworth, Glos. That makes his birthdate around 1840 Looked on FreeBMD, no luck there so went to 1837online and looked from Sep qtr 1839 to Jun qtr 1841 but not there either. Maybe his birth wasn`t registered I found a christening on the IGI, but that was an adult christening in 1840.

Daniel Brown was born in Edgefield per 51, 61, 71, 81 censuses. His baptism was in Edgefield. I couldn't find him or his family in 1841. In 1891 he said he was born in Gimmingham. I had a look at Gimmingham in 1841 and there was the whole family.... in the workhouse. Brenda

Hi Carol, How are things with you these days. Good to see you back with us. I am not sure but just South of Nailsworth (South Glos) came under Bristol and the records are still with Bristol record office, so they may be able to help you ascertain the actual place of birth. Ann Glos

I have census for a family on 4 censuses, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. On 3 the head is born Bristol, in the other he is born Nailsworth Glos. Its obviously the same family as the names and ages match.
